Dana, A Rare Gem in Jordan

For the past four months Taste Culture has been travelling the region in search of artists, musicians and well and opportunity to taste new cultures.

“Promise: This is one of Jordan’s rare gems that must be experienced. The Dana Tower Hotel is home away from home for backpackers looking for a serene atmosphere, good eats and Bedouin hospitality. Interested in avoiding touristic crowds then the village of Dana should be on your list! Natural springs, hiking, staff, food, cleanliness, reasonable prices and amazing views made it impossible for me to leave.” – Simba (Experienced: October 2010)

Location & background
Dana (ضانا) is a small 500 years old village near the city of Tafilah, in central-western Jordan. It is the only Jordanian village that preserves the 19th century villages of Jordan. Situated on the edge of a large natural gorge, Wadi Dana, it also hosts one of Jordan’s premier nature reserves and eco-tourism facilities named Dana nature reserve.

Great for
Backpackers, hikers, adventurers and nature lovers looking for an intimate environment

With whom
Come with a group of friends who will enjoy the nearby Dana Nature Reserve or the guided and unguided hikes into the desert, which can be seen from the hotel’s hilltop view. The honeymoon sweet is idea for lovers looking for a romantic rendezvous. Most importantly, it’s perfect for the solo traveller.

Memorable experience
For two weeks I had the pleasure of staying at the Dana Tower Hotel. The owner, Nabil Nwafleh, is one of five Bedouin brothers who after serving in the military and working with the Jordanian Embassy in Paris decided to revive his village of Dana. Daily tourists from all over the world sought out the Dana Tower Hotel, which has the best view of the mountains, sunset and sunrise.

Nabil and his nephew Hazim with their warmth and openness, provide visitors with the most unique experience. They provide local guides for hikes, tours and other information a traveller might need during their stay in Jordan.

Staff
I had the pleasure of spending time with the five Filipino women who keep the Dana Tower Hotel at it’s best. They boast of working for one of the most generous and kind employers they’ve ever had.

Price and services
For only JD15 visitors are provided with a private room, buffet breakfast and one of the most delicious buffet dinners one could imagine. And of course all the Bedouin whisky (mint tea) one could desire.

Room options
Family and group size rooms with individual beds are available as well as single privates. For those seeking more economical prices comfortable tents suited with a mattress, blankets and towels are also available on the rooftop for half the price.
